Good news for climate change: A hopeful view into a global problem in 2023

Climate change and our damaged environment, you have probably heard a lot of bad news surrounding these topics. Although we still have a long way to go, there is hope. In the past few years there have been plenty of reasons to celebrate our progress. For this article I wanted to list some of the good news for climate change.
Good news for climate change
Climate change, can we change it back?

Sometimes, it feels hopeless. How is our planet ever going to recover from all the damage we humans have done to it? I tend to feel overwhelmed when I watch the news or when I do my research for my content. However, there is also good news for climate change. I have lately come across some amazing projects and initiatives. There are luckily many people that have dedicated their lives trying to create a better tomorrow. I am happy to say that I came across so much wonderful news, I had to filter some out for this post. For this list I have therefore split my content up into categories.

I could create countless categories but for this post I have decided to focus on these 5 categories for now. I have tried to keep the list simple and clear but I hope it can cheer you up! I hope this article will give you an insight into all the good news for climate change. Don’t lose hope just yet, we are working on it!

Good news on the energy front

Good news for climate change: Renewable energy sources are becoming more popular.
Good news for climate change: Renewable energy sources are becoming more popular.

The most sustainable energy sources are renewable ones. Examples of renewable energy sources are solar energy, wind energy and water energy. Over the years there has been a lot of progress when it comes to getting our energy from the correct sources. Here is some good news on the green energy front:

  • The largest Wind turbine in the world has generated enough energy to provide 170000 households with power in just one day. This is a world record; (1)
  • India is working on a railway completely powered by solar power. 2700 acres of unused land has been appointed for the project; (2)
  • By 2030, it is expected that 33% of all energy worldwide will come from a renewable source;
  • On tuesday 26th of september in Ireland, wind generated energy exceeded its demands for electricity temporarily for the first time;
  • Portugal received 50% of its energy from wind and solar power at the end of 2022; (3)
  • In 2022, the United states received 40% of its energy from carbon free resources;
  • The city of London is working on a plan to turn of all the lights from office buildings at night to save up on energy; (4)

Good news for our nature

Good news for climate change: The deforestation of the amazon forest has reduced.
Good news for climate change: The deforestation of the amazon forest has reduced.

Due to climate change, our nature has been under a lot of pressure. Our ancient forests are being cut down for its wood and to make space for large fields of palm oil trees or fields to grow corn for cattle for example. Thankfully, there are many positive movements going on in the world to fight the destruction of our nature. Here is some good news for our nature:

  • In the Amazon forest in Brazil, AI- boxes have been hung up on various trees to protect the forest. The AI- boxes can detect the sound of chainsaws and tractors. They are there to help battle unlawful deforestation;
  • An organization called ‘’one tree’ celebrated planting 100 million trees over the last 9 years;
  • For 139 euros you can now protect 1 square kilometer of the ocean from pollution and fishing near the tiny island of Niue; (5)
  • France has voted to ban deep sea mining, protecting the oceans from pollution and damage;
  • The creation of a new coal mine in Australia, about 10 kilometers from the great barrier reef has been blocked to protect the environment; (6)
  • The new president of Brazil has protected the amazon forest from large amounts of deforestation;
  • More than a million oil barrels have been removed from a stranded supertanker on the coast of Yemen to prevent pollution to the oceans. (7)

Good news for our animals

Good news for climate change: 2000 rhinos are being released into the wild.
Good news for climate change: 2000 rhinos are being released into the wild.

Our wildlife has been under serious threat for decades. As we drive their natural habitat further and further back to make space for more human activities. The animal kingdom is shrinking. Our marine life has been in bad shape for years now. Due to climate change, our oceans are warming up which has led to disastrous consequences for our marine life. The decay of our animal kingdom has not been undetected and thankfully many are fighting for those who cannot speak for themselves. Here is some good news for our animals:

  • 2000 rhinos are being released back into the wild. A rhino farm put them up for auction but no one wanted them. They are now part of one of the biggest rewilding programs in the world; (8)
  • The National park of Galapagos has announced that 36 endangered giant tortoises have been released back into the wild; (9)
  • China has announced that the giant panda is no longer an endangered species; (10)
  • A zoo in great britain will have a herd of elephants to be released back into the wild;
  • In Wyoming (the United states), a group of volunteers have started taking down 600000 miles of fence so that wildlife can roam free;
  • The number of sea turtles that hedged in Cape Verde last year has increased massively;
  • Beavers have returned to London after years of successful breeding programs.

Good news on our waste management

Good news for climate change: There are many organizations putting there hands together in an effort to clean up our oceans.
Good news for climate change: There are many organizations putting there hands together in an effort to clean up our oceans.

Waste management is a big contributor to many of our climate and environmental problems. Our landfills are tragically large and the burning of our trash has led to horrible air pollution. Much of our trash ends up in our oceans. That we have a problem with our waste management has been known for many years. There have been many great initiatives to help and create better ways of dealing with our trash and some have been a great success. A better waste management means good news for climate change. Here is some good news on our waste management:

  • A robot built in France is able to detect different textiles in recycled wearables. This makes the recycling of textiles a lot more efficient; (11)
  • The plastic chairs that will be used during the upcoming Olympics, will be entirely made from recycled plastic;
  • The ocean cleanup has currently collected up to 153 tons of plastic form our oceans;
  • England has banned the use of single- use plastic;
  • Richard Hardiman has created a robot that looks like a shark that can scoop up plastic waste from the water;
  • In the Netherlands, a permit for a plastic production factory has been canceled.

Good news on the emission of greenhouse gasses

Good news for climate change: Electric cars have become more and more popular.
Good news for climate change: Electric cars have become more and more popular.

The base of climate change is global warming. Global warming in turn is a consequence of our greenhouse gas emissions. The balance has been disrupted many years ago and ever since we have become aware of this, many experts have been searching for ways to restore the balance. Their research has not been in vain as many countries and communities have put in an effort to decrease their carbon footprint. Here is some good news on the emission of greenhouse gasses:

  • In the past 14 years, India has lowered its emission rates by 33%, becoming a cleaner country; (12)
  • Luxemburg has celebrated 3 years of free public transport, in their fight against climate change;
  • Switzerland has voted in favor of a law to cut their greenhouse gas emissions to zero in 2050;
  • 8 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions have been prevented thanks to the installation of 3 million heat pumps in Europe;
  • The ozone layer is still recovering as predicted;
  • Electric cars are still growing in popularity, reducing the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted by fuel run cars.

What to do next?

Good news for climate change is out there. There is still a lot we can do to clean up the mess we made. The problems we have created often are painted as irreversible, however, in many cases this is not the truth. However, it is important that we are not there just yet. It will still take many decades to completely fix all that we broke. Let’s all look forward and be mindful towards our climate. Let’s love living sustainably.

FAQ

Can we fix our Ozon layer?

Yes, if we continue to lower our greenhouse emissions, it is expected that the holes in our Ozone layer will be closed by 2066.

Is climate change real?

Yes, climate change is real and has been proven to be so. The effect of human activities on our climate has been measured since 1970. Since then a lot of evidence has been gathered showing the significant impact humans have on our climate. Global warming which is at the base of climate change, is happening at a fast rate due to greenhouse gas emissions. Human activities are responsible for large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions resulting in a global rise in temperature, Global Warming. (13)
